"This above all, to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou can't not then be false to any man" - from William Shakespeare's ‘Hamlet’ \\ Update: I’ve been sitting on this post for a while now, one in which I share the news that after five + years, my Co-Directorship of NORTHART has come to a premature close. There are big feelings associated with this change. Whilst this work formed part of my identity, it’s been a big part. Commencing in February 2020, my Co-Directorship began as a ‘baptism of fire’, Covid was followed by funding cut campaigns, the Auckland Anniversary floods that devastated the gallery and a recession, culminating in the closure of the Norman King Galleries at the end of 2025, while the new gallery is built. The achievements of our small team have been profound. To get through these past five years of extramural challenges, deliver the programme that we have, all the while planning and advocating for, a new community gallery for the North Shore defies logic. I’m a huge believer in giving thanks and credit where it is due - particularly to those that work tirelessly and passionately to drive, create and contribute to Aotearoa’s vital arts sector. I’d like to give my utmost thanks and respect to my Co-Director, Jonathan Organ @jonathan.organ Thank you to our dedicated team of Gallery Assistants - I’m extremely proud of what you are all accomplishing in your respective creative careers. Thank you to those who have genuinely championed the gallery - to our audience, to those Governance Committee members who have truly believed in our vision and capability to deliver on that vision; to our wider group of colleagues and volunteers who have shared and supported our vision for gallery. Finally, my thanks and respect go to the artists. We wouldn’t be here without you. Keep creating, telling the truths of this world, challenging the status quo, and sharing your visions with us. What a beautiful, frightening, heartening time sharing my ‘Wearable ABSTRAXTIONS’ with friends and colleagues at the Aotearoa Art Fair this week. This new series marks the debut of a fresh stream in my practice and ongoing investigation into an abstract creative process. Crafted from repurposed fabrics collected over years, each work is made under the same conditions as my paintings. A focus on materiality, colour, tone, form, geometry and structure is woven into each work’s composition.
